Who woulda thought? Two apples, a cucumber, two oranges, and two fist-fulls of spinach... for breakfast? I've definitely learned a few things in the past few days. Apples provide a good amount of juice... spinach, not so much. The cucumber definitely adds a different level of flavor. It's actually really sweet! I originally only had one apple in the mix, but in the first tasting, the spinach was extremely overpowering. Another apple balanced everything out and breakfast was served!
It's New Years Eve and I'm going out tonight. Call it a last hoorah before my journey through foodlessness. I'll eat light for lunch and dinner today and have champagne flowing through the evening! Through this 21 day expedition, I'll be doing nothing but juice. No food, no alcohol, no snacks; following this idea to the letter and writing about every aspect. First weigh in is tomorrow morning/afternoon (depending on when I wake up) and we'll see how it goes!

Preparations!
Here we are, a matter of days before the Great Juice Fast of 2011 and the prep has begun! Like I said yesterday, I bought the Breville Juice Fountain Plus and some produce. What produce? Lettuce, carrots, oranges, spinach, wheat grass, beets, celery, cucumbers, apples (red AND green), grapefruit, pineapple, and a bunch of other stuff. So the next step is to start playing with stuff. I asked around and got a few ideas on what to throw in first.
I ripped the box open, put the juicer together (super easy) and grabbed the first thing that sounded good: oranges and carrots. Then I remembered that I had read about the benefits of adding celery to your juice. Fine. I turn on the juicer and the first thing I notice is how quiet it is. I was expecting this deafening, blender-type machine. This thing is no louder than a hand-held vacuum. In go the oranges (peeled of course). The shards of orange pulp spray all over the inside of the clear plastic container and out flows some juice. Nice. Next go the carrots, shortly followed by the celery. Stir stir stir... taste. Not bad. Not bad at all. The juice is thick and flavorful, definitely not your every day, sugared up, store-bought juice. Looking for some more good ideas. If you've got any, shoot 'em my way. I'll be messing around with fruits and veggies for the next few days to get an idea of what I'll be drinking all day for the next 3 weeks.
The final piece to the puzzle? A 40oz Thermos, of course! Now I have it all: juicer, juice-containing foods, and a stay-cool-all-day vessel! Bada bing.

Start Juicin'!
Alright... so here we go. A chronicle following my journey through "Getting Juiced"... in other words: jumping on the juice fast bandwagon. What does this mean? It means I've bought a juicer (specifically, the Breville Juice Fountain Plus) and a ton of produce, and I'm going to be on a juice binge for the next 21 days (three weeks for the mathematically challenged).
The plan? Lose a ton of weight, kick caffeine for good, work on my food addiction (yes, it's a real problem), and save some money on buying new clothes by fitting into my old ones!
For starters, I'm a 28 year old man. A former athlete (by former, I mean 10 years ago) who still has the idea that he can get up off the couch and run a mile anytime he feels like it. That is, until the next day when my knee is swollen and throbbing. I haven't put myself through any type of significant exercise in well over 6 months, mainly because I'm so damn heavy that any time I put any type of athletic stress on my knee, it wants to explode.
How heavy? I'm 5'11", 250 lbs. There, I said it. I weigh 250 lbs. What SHOULD I weigh? According to doctors and the Body Mass Index (BMI), I should weigh about 170 lbs. That's 80 lbs of weight that they say I need to lose before I'm "healthy". Here's my problem with that... the last time I was 170 lbs, I was in 10th grade and I was a cross-country runner. I also looked sickly and had zero muscle mass. In great shape, I weigh between 185-195lbs. So, in the spirit of easing myself into this fantastic mess... I'd like to be 30lbs lighter (220lbs) by the time I finish my juice fast.
More to follow. Time to put in work.
